1. Moisture retention. Mulching can reduce moisture evaporation anywhere from 10 to 50 percent

2. Weed supression. Mulching eliminates the need to weed, if the mulch itself is weed-free and is deep enough to prevent existing weeds from germinating.

3. Insulator. Mulch keeps soil cooler during hot days and warmer during cooler nights.

4. Improves the soil. Mulch helps prevent soil compaction, acts as a soil conditioner and even encourages the presence of natural aerators, earthworms.

5. Protects plants. Mulch prevents plants from being splashed by mud and water during heavy rains, one of the main causes of soil-borne diseases. It will also keep the fruit from touching the soil and developing rotten spots and molds.

6. Adds nutrients. Organic mulches contribute to the availabilityof pottasium, and can add nitrogen, phosphorus and trace elements to the soil.

7. Helps the environment. Mulch reduces the need for chemicals and is an ideal way to make use of recycled yard waste.

8. Aesthetically appealing. Mulching can add color and texture to the landscape and by keeping weeds down, it keeps the yard and garden looking neat and clean.
